Well, I am impressed
I was not at all attracted by the concept of a new Emmanuelle, and I was put off by the piles of negative reviews. I think very few people have understood the film: While some may try to relate it to the original, it is much less exotic and frivolous.
But it is also a film with exceptional erotic tension
If, on the other hand, others find its depiction of explicit sexuality silly, they have not understood what eroticism is all about. The film, in fact, is not only an almost complete rewrite of the original work (at least on the surface, since for those who know the source material, inspiration abounds).
This tension is sustained by clinical and, some would say, cold direction, with much left unspoken
However, this coldness is necessary to help us understand what really touches our hearts: the portrait of a woman full of singularity, who seeks her individuality through her independence, who is not far from solitude. This is where the common audience will be confused: how can you make a “libertine” film (like a shared sexuality) about an individual (as opposed to the group)?
